Community Service
WORKCAMP is a 3-day
service immersion for Catholic young people. The mission is to
help everyone in camp to develop a deeper understanding of social
justice through direct service, prayer and reflection.
Workcamp 2004 saw 72 people in
camp: 36 - 7th & 8th graders, 21 high school peer leaders, and 15
adults. It was once again held at the Free Methodist Camp on Pine
Rd. in Saratoga Springs. 7 Work groups went out each day into the
community to do service. They helped at Mary's Haven, Maplewood
Manor, the EOC food pantry, Home of the Good Shepherd, Spier Falls
Group Home, Wilton Preserve, the group home on Wilton Rd., and
four Head Starts: Mechanicville, Ballston Spa, Saratoga and
Stillwater.
We also had a visit from Cliff
Sequin from "Operation Adopt A Soldier", based at Mt. McGregor
Correctional Facility, who spoke of the American soldiers serving
in Iraq. His son is in Iraq, and when he was first there he was 18
years old, and he wrote home and said he really missed his mom's
chocolate chip cookies. That was the inspiration for "Operation
Adopt A Soldier" and it has grown and been responsible for sending
hundreds of "care packages" overseas. We collected items to send
and helped Cliff to package them for shipment. We also wrote
letters to service men and women.
Workcamp culminated in a
presentation and potluck dinner attended by family and friends.
We would like to thank Fr. Tizio
for celebrating liturgy with us on Thursday night. His support
means so much to us!
I would like to express my deep
and sincere appreciation to everyone on staff - because without
their dedication and commitment Workcamp would not be possible!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
